What to Do in an Orthodontic Emergency
If you encounter an orthodontic emergency, remember that many common issues can be resolved over the phone. You can always call us to describe your problem or concern. Our experienced team can provide advice or schedule an appointment as soon as possible if necessary.
Before leaving the office, ensure that you inform your dentist about anything poking or causing discomfort.
Types of Braces Emergencies
- Loose Bracket: This is the most common issue. If a bracket becomes loose, for example, after biting into a granola bar, it usually isn't an emergency unless it causes severe discomfort or pain. If the bracket comes off completely, please bring it to your next appointment.
- Poking Ligature Tie: Metal ligature ties might poke your gums, lips, or cheek if dislodged. Try to tuck the offending end under the wire with a Q-tip or pencil eraser. If that doesn’t work, apply orthodontic wax to protect your mouth.
- Canker Sore or Ulcer: These can occur as your mouth adjusts to braces. For pain relief, apply Orajel to the sore, use orthodontic wax on the opposing bracket, or take over-the-counter pain relievers like Advil or Tylenol. Staying hydrated is also helpful.
- Swallowed Appliance: Though rare, swallowing a small orthodontic piece like a bracket or ligature tie is generally not harmful. Our digestive systems can handle these without issue. There is no need to retrieve it or bring it to the office.
- Poking Wire: If an archwire dislodges or protrudes due to teeth shifting, it can be temporarily managed with orthodontic wax until you can visit your dentist for an adjustment.
- Lost Elastics: Missing elastics on brackets are not urgent and can typically wait until your next scheduled visit.
